 Berniedue

Bernadetta quaked a little and gripped the striped denim of her overalls in her bony fists. There were five of them lined up in the heated tent out front of the conservatory, decked out in the  Garden's uniform and then a baggy "train engineer" outfit over top of that - overalls, a hat, and a little bandana. The manager was explaining how to use the handheld barcode scanner for tickets, but Bernadetta wasn't hearing much. She had taken a very, very wrong turn somewhere.

It was a seasonal job, desperate for warm bodies, so of course they would take her - they'd take anyone, even stupid, stupid Bernie - but she hadn't quite realized how much face time she would have with customers. Before she knew it, Bernadetta was dressed up like a glorified mascot for the Derdriu Botanical Garden holiday exhibit. She would rather BE a mascot! Imagine if she had a big Rudy the Wyvern suit. No one would have to see her face...

"-detta? Bernadetta?"

She snapped back to reality and nearly vibrated out of her skin.

Dedue looked at her, contemplatively. "We're going in now for the self-guided tour." It was supposed to be one of the perks of the job, getting to see the exhibit without paying. They needed to go through the whole thing to be able to guide guests to the exits or bathrooms, after all. Oh, guests... nnnrghff.

"We do not have to walk through it together, if you are uncomfortable," said Dedue. "I wanted to make sure you knew, but I'll go now-"

"No?!" shrieked Bernadetta. "Why would you leave me alone here?"

This gave Dedue pause. "I thought I might be making you uncomfortable. Everyone else in the group left me behind."

"Well, they can go ahead. They're all strangers," said Bernadetta. She exhaled and clutched one hand to her chest, where the red bandana was sticking out of her overalls' pocket.

"You don't think we are strangers?" asked Dedue. "We haven't spoken much, even in class. I don't even live on campus." Dedue was the year above her, but they had ended up in the same section of the required theology course at school.

"You're the only person I recognize in an ocean of unfamiliar faces," Bernadetta replied. "Consider yourself promoted. Seriously don't leave me alone here. I can't imagine facing all those... customers." She shivered.

Dedue held the door to the atrium open for her. It was good practice; this was essentially what Dedue and Bernadetta would be doing for the steady flow of guests to the holiday show all night. Just opening the outer door from the tent to the glass hothouse, making sure the precious heated air did not escape too far. It was vital to preserving the plants inside.
